The black-naped tern (Sterna sumatrana) belongs to the family Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.

Black-naped tern taxonomy

The family Laridae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815. The family Laridae comprises around 100 species arranged into 22 genera, including the genus Sterna.

The genus Sterna was introduced by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758. The genus Sterna comprises thirteen species, including the species Sterna sumatrana.

The species Sterna sumatrana was first introduced by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, FRS (6 July 1781 – 5 July 1826), a British statesman, in the year 1822.

The species Sterna sumatrana is polytypic and comprises two subspecies, namely, Sterna sumatrana mathewsi (Stresemann, 1914) and Sterna sumatrana sumatrana (Raffles, 1822).
