The Tawny fish owl (Ketupa flavipes) belongs to the family Strigidae under the order Strigiformes.

The family Strigidae comprises around 189 living species in 25 genera. Four Asian species are included under the genus Ketupa. The species Ketupa flavipes mainly capture their prey from streams. They usually hunt for the prey after the sunset and before dawn.

In places where aquaculture farms are present, these birds resort to catch easily available prey from the ponds. In aquaculture farms the preferred time of hunting by the Ketupa sp. is before midnight.

A conflict has emerged between the aquaculture farmers and these rare bird species. These birds are illegally shot at, trapped or killed by these farmers to stop predation and financial losses.
