The vernal hanging parrot (Loriculus vernalis) belongs to the family Psittaculidae in the order Psittaciformes.

The genus Loriculus is a group of small green birds from tropical southern Asia. These species are unique among birds for their ability to hang upside down while resting or sleeping. These Loriculus spp. take a peculiar defecation posture when they are upside down to protect the plumage from getting soiled.

The Loriculus vernalis prefers soft fruits and there is much regurgitation and remastication of food. They do not use their foot in feeding. There are instances of Loriculus vernalis flying to palmyrah trees, consuming palm wine (toddy) collected in earthen pots and getting intoxicated.

Though the Loriculus vernalis bring their foot directly to the bill for preening, they scratch the body indirectly. They readily enter standing water and splash and take bath. The Loriculus vernalis take an upside-down pseudo-sleeping posture in response to the appearance of predators.

The Loriculus vernalis form pairs after attaining maturity and the bond is initiated and maintained by courtship feeding. The male bird is often seen strutting around. Both the pair take part in cutting nest lining material.
