The family Charadriidae was described by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in a guide to the contents of the British Museum published in 1820.

The family Charadriidae has two taxonomic subgroups, subfamily Vanellinae and subfamily Charadriinae classified under it. The subfamily Charadriinae has eight genera and the subfamily Vanellinae has two genera under them.

The two genera under Vanellinae are Erythrogonys and Vanellus. The genus Erythrogonys is monotypic, having only one species, viz., Erythrogonys cinctus classified under it.

The genus Vanellus has about 24 extant species and four prehistoric species. The species Vanellus malabaricus is endemic to Indian subcontinent.
