The Sabine's gull (Xema sabini) belongs to the family Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.

Sabine's gull taxonomy

The family Laridae was first introduced by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815. The Laridae comprises about hundred species arranged under 22 genera.

The genus Xema was first described by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1819. The genus Xema is monotypic and includes species Xema sabini.

The species Xema sabini was first found by Joseph Sabine FRS (6 June 1770 – 24 January 1837), an English lawyer and naturalist, in the year 1819 in Sabine islands, near Melville Bay, on west coast of Greenland.

Tentatively four subspecies are placed under the species Xema sabini, viz., Xema sabini palaearctica, Xema sabini tschuktschorum, Xema sabini woznesenskii and Xema sabini sabini.
