The Parulidae is the family of New World warblers, restricted to Americas and Caribbean. The family Parulidae was first introduced by Frank Alexander Wetmore (June 18, 1886 – December 7, 1978), an American ornithologist and avian paleontologist, in the year 1947.The family Parulidae comprises 17 genera, including genus Seiurus. The genus Seiurus is monotypic and comprises the species Seiurus aurocapilla (ovenbird).
The genus Seiurus was first described by William John Swainson FLS, FRS (8 October 1789 – 6 December 1855), an English ornithologist, malacologist, conchologist and entomologist, in the year 1827.
The species Seiurus aurocapilla has characteristic head-bobbing, tail-flicking gait. "Etymologically aurocapilla comes from Latin and means 'golden haired' and Seiurus is from Ancient Greek seio, 'to shake', and urus, 'tail'."
The species Seiurus aurocapilla was first described (as Motacilla aurocapilla) by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1766.
The species Seiurus aurocapilla is polytypic and comprises subspecies, S. a. aurocapilla, S. a. cinereus and S. a. furvior.
