Taxonomic classification    Photos
The Asian emerald cuckoo (Chrysococcyx maculatus) belongs to the family Cuculidae, the sole taxon under the order Cuculiformes.

The family Cuculidae contains more than hundred species, comprised in several genera. The genus Chrysococcyx contains six Asio-African species and seven Australo-Papuan species. All the species under this genus are brood parasites.

The female Chrysococcyx maculatus lays egg in the nest of little spiderhunter (Arachnothera longirostra) or the crimson sunbird (Aethopyga siparaja). It watches the nest of the potential host, usually from a nearby tree and wait for the host to start laying eggs.

When the host is away from the nest, the female C. maculatus swoops down on the nest and removing one of the host eggs, replaces it with one of her own. Once the egg laying is accomplished, it looks for other potential nests for laying eggs.
