The common swift (Apus apus) belongs to the family Apodidae under the order Apodiformes.

Anders Hedenström et al from Department of Biology, Centre for Animal Movement Research, Lund University, Ecology Building, 22362 Lund, Sweden, in their research paper "Annual 10-Month Aerial Life Phase in the Common Swift Apus apus" have brought to light several astonishing facts about the species Apus apus.

It is a known fact that Apus apus is a highly aerial bird, spending much of its life on the wing. These species eat, drink, sleep, and even mate while flying. Only for nesting they are required to land on vertical perches. The juveniles may roost for short periods.

The non-breeding birds stay airborne while the nesting birds construct nests, lay eggs and raise the young.

The entire wintering migration to sub-Saharan Africa and their stay during the winter is on the wings. No roosting sites of these species have been found in sub-Saharan Africa.
