River tern taxonomy

The family Laridae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815. The family Laridae comprises nearly 100 species arranged in 22 genera, including the genus Sterna.

The genus Sterna was first introduced by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758. The genus Sterna comprises thirteen species, including Sterna aurantia.

After a molecular phylogenetic study by Baker and colleagues published in 2007, Laridae was expanded to include the genera that had previously been in Sternidae and Rynchopidae.

The species Sterna aurantia is monotypic and was first described by John Edward Gray, FRS (12 February 1800 – 7 March 1875), a British zoologist, in the year 1831.
