The family Laridae comprises nearly 100 species arranged in 22 genera, including the genus Sterna. The genus Sterna was first introduced by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758. The genus Sterna comprises thirteen species, including Sterna aurantia.
After a molecular phylogenetic study by Baker and colleagues published in 2007, Laridae was expanded to include the genera that had previously been in Sternidae and Rynchopidae.
