The Black stork (Ciconia nigra) belongs to the family Ciconiidae under the order Ciconiiformes.
Black stork taxonomy
The Ciconiidae is the family of large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds with long, stout bills. The Ciconiidae is the only family presently kept under the order Ciconiiformes.The family Ciconiidae was first introduced by John Edward Gray, FRS (12 February 1800 – 7 March 1875), a British zoologist, in the year 1840.
The family Ciconiidae contains six genera, viz., Mycteria, Leptoptilos, Jabiru, Ephippiorhynchus, Ciconia and Anastomus.
The genus Ciconia was described by Mathurin Jacques Brisson (30 April 1723 – 23 June 1806), a French zoologist and natural philosopher, in the year 1760.
The genus Ciconia comprises seven extant species, viz., Ciconia abdimii, Ciconia boyciana, Ciconia stormi, Ciconia nigra, Ciconia maguari, Ciconia ciconia and Ciconia episcopus.
The species Ciconia nigra (black stork) was first described by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758. The species Ciconia nigra is monotypic.
