The russet-backed oropendola (Psarocolius angustifrons) belongs to the family Icteridae under the order Passeriformes.
Russet-backed oropendola taxonomy
The family Icteridae comprises colorful, New-World passerine birds. The family Icteridae was first introduced by Nicholas Aylward Vigors (1785 – 26 October 1840), an Irish zoologist and politician, in the year 1825.The family Icteridae contains 28 extant genera, including genus Psarocolius. The genus Psarocolius was first described by Johann Georg Wagler (28 March 1800 – 23 August 1832), a German herpetologist, in the year 1827.
The genus Psarocolius tentatively comprises six species, including Psarocolius angustifrons. The species Psarocolius angustifrons was first described by Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix (9 February 1781 – 13 March 1826), a German biologist, in the year 1824.
The species Psarocolius angustifrons is polytypic and comprises six subspecies, viz., P. a. angustifrons, P. a. alfredi, P. a. atrocastaneus, P. a. sincipitalis, P. a. salmoni and P. a. neglectus.
