Reproduction in greater painted-snipe
The Rostratula benghalensis species are polyandrous and show reverse sexual dimorphism. Soon after laying eggs, the female deserts the male, leaving him with the task of incubation and care of the chicks. After gathering sufficient energy reserves, the female selects its next mate and lays his clutch. The nests are built on the ground, usually among tall clumps of grass or weeds. The nest is a cavity on the ground covered with a pad of grass. Usually the female builds the nest. The eggs are laid in the depression in the center of the nest. The nest sites are well concealed by grass growth.
The average size of the Rostratula benghalensis clutch is four eggs. The eggs are yellow with blackish brown blotches. It takes nearly 72 hours to complete laying of a clutch of four eggs. The incubation period is for about 20 days. The chicks have downy feathers and are precocial, walking about after an hour of hatching.
The male bird resorts to distraction display when some intruder approaches the nest. If the intruder is too close, the male threatens by going towards the intruder spread wings, emitting a snake-like hiss.
