Blue pitta taxonomy

The name of the family Pittidae is derived from the word 'pita', meaning bird in the Telugu language of South India.

The 'Pittidae' were first described scientifically by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in 1766 in his revised 12th edition of the Systema Naturae.

"A 2006 study of the nuclear DNA of the pittas, using study skins from museums, was the first to examine most representatives of the family, and found evidence of three major clades" of family Pittidae.

The genus Hydrornis contains thirteen species, viz., Hydrornis phayrei, Hydrornis nipalensis, Hydrornis soror, Hydrornis oatesi, Hydrornis schneideri, Hydrornis caeruleus, Hydrornis baudii, Hydrornis cyaneus, Hydrornis elliotii, Hydrornis gurneyi, Hydrornis guajanus, Hydrornis irena and Hydrornis schwaneri.

All these species are found in South-east Asia.
