The black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) belongs to the family Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.
Black-legged kittiwake taxonomy
The family Laridae was first described (as Laridia) by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815. The family Laridae comprises around 100 species arranged into 22 genera.The genus Rissa was first described by James Francis Stephens (16 September 1792 – 22 December 1852), an English entomologist and naturalist, in the year 1826. This genus comprises two species, viz., Rissa tridactyla and Rissa brevirostris.
The species Rissa tridactyla was first introduced (as Larus tridactylus) by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist in the year 1758.
The species Rissa tridactyla is polytypic, comprising two subspecies, viz., R. t. tridactyla and R. t. pollicaris. The species R. t. pollicaris was first introduced by Robert Ridgway (July 2, 1850 – March 25, 1929), an American ornithologist, in the year 1884.
