The Indian pond heron (Ardeola grayii) belongs to the family of egrets and herons, the Ardeidae under the order Pelecaniformes.
Indian pond heron taxonomy
The Ardeidae is the family of herons. The family Ardeidae was first described by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820.The family Ardeidae comprises three subfamilies, viz., Tigriornithinae, Botaurinae and Ardeinae. The subfamily Ardeinae contains eleven extant genera, including Ardeola.
The genus Ardeola (pond herons) was first introduced by Friedrich Boie (4 June 1789 – 3 March 1870), a German entomologist, herpetologist and ornithologist, in the year 1822.
The genus Ardeola comprises six extant species, viz., Ardeola ralloides, Ardeola bacchus, Ardeola speciosa, Ardeola idae, Ardeola rufiventris and Ardeola grayii.
This Ardeola grayii heron species is monotypic. This heron species was first described by Colonel William Henry Sykes, FRS (25 January 1790 – 16 June 1872), an English naturalist, in the year 1832.
