The Cotton pygmy-goose (Nettapus coromandelianus) belongs to the family Anatidae under the order Anseriformes.
Cotton pygmy-goose taxonomy
The Anatidae is the family of ducks, geese and swans. The family Anatidae was first introduced by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820.The family Anatidae comprises seven subfamilies. However, the genus Nettapus is not assigned to any of these subfamilies.
The genus Nettapus was first described by Johann Friedrich von Brandt (25 May 1802 – 15 July 1879), a German naturalist, in the year 1836.
The genus Nettapus comprises three extant species, viz., Nettapus auritus, Nettapus coromandelianus and Nettapus pulchellus. The Nettapus coromandelianus is a polytypic species.
The species Nettapus coromandelianus was first described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin (8 August 1748 – 1 November 1804), a German naturalist, botanist, entomologist and herpetologist, in the year 1789.
