The jack snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus) belongs to the family Scolopacidae under the order Charadriiformes.
These Lymnocryptes minimus species are largely nocturnal or crepuscular and are well camouflaged in their habitat. These birds squat down in their hide out and do not flush from the cover until the approaching intruder is quite close. Then suddenly they fly away for a short distance and settle back into vegetation.
To count breeding individuals in an area, the following method provided an accurate means of counting the numbers. A 70 meters long polypropylene rope of 1 cm diameter is stretched and dragged by two persons along the ground. The flushed jack snipes are counted.
The survey is usually carried out within three hours of dawn or dusk. The surveying method may be modified considering contour of the area. A team of observers follow the rope to count the number flushed birds and nests. Sometimes tin cans are inserted in the rope to make rattling noise.
