Breeding behavior of crab-plover
The species Dromas ardeola have evolved unique breeding behaviors. These are the only shore-birds nesting in burrows dug into sandy islands or sand dunes. The Dromas ardeola are the only species among the shorebirds that lay a white egg. The eggs develop with solar assisted incubation and reduced contact incubation.
The hatchlings cannot walk soon after hatching and the parents take turns to feed them. The chicks remain in the burrows until fledging. Soon after fledging, the juveniles leave the breeding colony accompanying the parents.
The species Dromas ardeola are the only shorebird to provide food to juveniles, even after the post breeding migration. They also feed the juveniles throughout the winter.
