The fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo (Surniculus dicruroides) belongs to the family Cuculidae under the order Cuculiformes.

Fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo taxonomy

The family Cuculidae comprises about 26 genera. The family Cuculidae was introduced by the English zoologist William Elford Leach in 1820.

The genus Surniculus was first described by Lesson, 1830, as 'le Surnicon' in French. The genus Surniculus is the diminutive of Surnicon + Cuculus.

The four species in the genus Surniculus are, Surniculus lugubris, Surniculus dicruroides, Surniculus musschenbroeki and Surniculus velutinus.

The species Surniculus lugubris is polytypic with two subspecies: S. l. barussarum Oberholser, 1912 and S. l. lugubris (Horsfield, 1821).

The species Surniculus dicruroides is polytypic with two subspecies: S. d. dicruroides (Hodgson, 1839) and S. d. stewarti E. C. S. Baker, 1920.

The species Surniculus musschenbroeki is monotypic.

The species Surniculus velutinus is polytypic with three subspecies: S. v. chalybaeus Salomonsen, 1953, S. v. velutinus Sharpe, 1877 and S. v. suluensis Salomonsen, 1953.
