Asian (western) koel taxonomy
The family Cuculidae was introduced by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in a guide to the contents of the British Museum published in 1820.The family Cuculidae has six subfamilies and about 26 genera. The subfamily Cuculinae includes 13 genera.
The genus Eudynamys has three extant species (Eudynamys scolopaceus, Eudynamys melanorhynchus and Eudynamys orientalis) and one prehistoric species (Eudynamis cf. taitensis).
The species Eudynamys melanorhynchus and Eudynamys orientalis were earlier considered conspecific under the scientific name Eudynamys scolopaceus, but are increasingly treated as separate species.
The Eudynamys spp. are large, sexually dimorphic birds. They are brood parasites, laying eggs in the nest of other species and relying on the host to raise their young.
