The lineated barbet (Psilopogon lineatus) belongs to the family Megalaimidae under the order Piciformes.
Lineated barbet taxonomy
The family Megalaimidae includes two subfamilies, viz., Megalaiminae and Caloramphinae. The subfamily Megalaiminae is monotypic and genus Psilopogon is included under it. The genus Psilopogon has 32 species.Earlier, the genus Psilopogon used to include a single species, Psilopogon pyrolophus. Molecular phylogenetic studies found that the Psilopogon sp. has very close similarities with species placed in the genus Megalaima. Hence, the genera Psilopogon and Megalaima required to be clubbed.
Since Psilopogon was described by Muller in 1835-36, well before the genus Megalaima was erected by G. R. Gray (in 1841), it takes priority and all the Megalaima spp. were brought under genus Psilopogon.
The species Psilopogon lineatus (as Capito lineatus) was first described by Louis Pierre Vieillot (May 10, 1748, Yvetot – August 24, 1830, Sotteville-lès-Rouen), a French ornithologist. in the year 1816.
