The Asian openbill (Anastomus oscitans) belongs to the family Ciconiidae under the order Ciconiiformes.
Asian openbill taxonomy
The Ciconiidae is the family of large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds with long, stout bills. The Ciconiidae is the only family presently kept under the order Ciconiiformes.The family Ciconiidae was first introduced by John Edward Gray, FRS (12 February 1800 – 7 March 1875), a British zoologist, in the year 1840.
The family Ciconiidae contains six genera, viz., Mycteria, Leptoptilos, Jabiru, Ephippiorhynchus, Ciconia and Anastomus.
The genus Anastomus was described by AbbĂ© Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752 – 20 September 1804), a French naturalist, in the year 1791.
The genus Anastomus comprises two extant species, viz., Anastomus oscitans and Anastomus lamelligerus.
The species Anastomus oscitans was first described by Pieter Boddaert (1730 – 6 May 1795), a Dutch physician and naturalist, in the year 1783. The species Anastomus oscitans is a monotypic species.
