The Painted stork (Mycteria leucocephala) belongs to the family Ciconiidae under the order Ciconiiformes.
Painted stork taxonomy
The Ciconiidae is the family of large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds with long, stout bills. The Ciconiidae is the only family presently kept under the order Ciconiiformes.The family Ciconiidae was first introduced by John Edward Gray, FRS (12 February 1800 – 7 March 1875), a British zoologist, in the year 1840.
The family Ciconiidae contains six genera, viz., Mycteria, Leptoptilos, Jabiru, Ephippiorhynchus, Ciconia and Anastomus.
The genus Mycteria was described by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758.
The genus Mycteria comprises four extant species, viz., Mycteria americana, Mycteria leucocephala, Mycteria ibis and Mycteria cinerea.
The species Mycteria leucocephala was first described by Thomas Pennant (14 June 1726 – 16 December 1798), a Welsh naturalist, in the year 1769. Mycteria leucocephala is a monotypic species.
