The Ruddy kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda) belongs to the family of kingfishers, the Alcedinidae under the order Coraciiformes.

Ruddy kingfisher taxonomy

The family Alcedinidae is first introduced by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist and botanist, in the year 1815.

The family Alcedinidae comprises three subfamilies, viz., Alcedininae, Halcyoninae and Cerylinae. The subfamily Halcyoninae was described by Nicholas Aylward Vigors (1785 – 26 October 1840), an Irish zoologist, in the year 1825.

The subfamily Halcyoninae comprises twelve genera, including genus Halcyon. The genus Halcyon (tree kingfishers) was first described by William John Swainson FLS, FRS (8 October 1789 – 6 December 1855), an English ornithologist, malacologist, conchologist and entomologist, in the year 1821.

The genus Halcyon comprises eleven species, including Halcyon coromanda. The species Halcyon coromanda was first described by John Latham (27 June 1740 – 4 February 1837), an English physician and naturalist, in the year 1790.

The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) belongs to the family of bee-eaters, the Meropidae under the order Coraciiformes.

European bee-eater taxonomy

The family Meropidae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815.

The family Meropidae comprises 27 species divide into three genera, viz., Nyctyornis, Meropogon and Merops. The genus Merops comprises 24 species, including Merops apiaster.

The species Merops apiaster was first described by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758.

The species Merops apiaster is monotypic and closely related to Merops superciliosus and Merops ornatus.

The species Merops apiaster is distributed in Africa, Europe, Asia and Indian subcontinent. It winters in lower latitudes of tropical Africa.

The Bucerotidae is the family of hornbills. The family Bucerotidae was first introduced by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist and botanist, in the year 1815.

The family Bucerotidae comprises, subfamilies Bucorvinae (ground hornbills) and Bucerotinae (typical hornbills). The subfamily Bucerotinae comprises fifteen genera, including Anthracoceros.

The genus Anthracoceros was first described by Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (January 8, 1793 – March 17, 1879), a German botanist and ornithologist, in the year 1849.

The genus Anthracoceros comprises five species, viz., Anthracoceros albirostris, Anthracoceros malayanus, Anthracoceros coronatus, Anthracoceros marchei and Anthracoceros montani.

The species Anthracoceros albirostris is polytypic. It was first described by George Kearsley Shaw (10 December 1751 – 22 July 1813) and Frederick Polydore Nodder in the year 1807.

The Laridae is the family of gulls, terns and skimmers. The family Laridae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815.

The family Laridae comprises around 100 species arranged into 22 genera, including the genus Ichthyaetus. The genus Ichthyaetus is polytypic and contains six gull species.

The genus Ichthyaetus was first introduced by Johann Jakob von Kaup (10 April 1803 – 4 July 1873), a German naturalist, in the year 1829.

The gull species Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus was first described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck (31 March 1778 – 30 January 1858), a Dutch aristocrat, zoologist and museum director, in the year 1825. The species Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus is monotypic.
