The Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana) belongs to the family Ciconiidae under the order Ciconiiformes.
Oriental stork taxonomy
The family Ciconiidae is the only family under the order Ciconiiformes. The Ciconiidae was first described by John Edward Gray, FRS (12 February 1800 – 7 March 1875), a British zoologist, in the year 1840.The family Ciconiidae comprises six genera, viz., Anastomus, Ciconia, Ephippiorhynchus, Jabiru, Leptoptilos and Mycteria.
The genus Ciconia was first introduced by Mathurin Jacques Brisson (30 April 1723 – 23 June 1806), a French zoologist and natural philosopher, in the year 1760.
The genus Ciconia comprises seven extant species, viz., Ciconia abdimii, Ciconia boyciana, Ciconia episcopus, Ciconia maguari, Ciconia nigra, Ciconia stormi and Ciconia ciconia.
The species Ciconia boyciana is monotypic. The species C. boyciana is listed as Endangered Species by IUCN.
