The White-eyed gull (Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus) belongs to the family of terns and gulls, the Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.
White-eyed gull taxonomy
The Laridae is the family of gulls, terns and skimmers. The family Laridae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815.The family Laridae comprises around 100 species arranged into 22 genera, including the genus Ichthyaetus. The genus Ichthyaetus is polytypic and contains six gull species.
The genus Ichthyaetus was first introduced by Johann Jakob von Kaup (10 April 1803 – 4 July 1873), a German naturalist, in the year 1829.
The gull species Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus was first described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck (31 March 1778 – 30 January 1858), a Dutch aristocrat, zoologist and museum director, in the year 1825. The species Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus is monotypic.
