The family Phasianidae is tentatively divided into four subfamilies. The subfamily Perdicinae was described by Thomas Horsfield in 1821.

The subfamily Perdicinae comprises twenty-five genera, including genus Francolinus. The genus Francolinus was introduced by James Francis Stephens (16 September 1792 – 22 December 1852), an English entomologist and naturalist, in the year 1819.

The genus Francolinus is polytypic and comprises five species, including Francolinus francolinus. The species Francolinus francolinus was introduced by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778).
