The oriental pratincole (Glareola maldivarum) belongs to the family Glareolidae under the order Charadriiformes.

Oriental pratincole taxonomy

The family Glareolidae is divided into two subfamilies, Glareolinae and Cursoriinae. The subfamily Glareolinae has two genera under it and the subfamily Cursoriinae comprises of three genera.

The genera under Glareolinae are Stiltia and Glareola. The genera under Cursoriinae are Cursorius, Rhinoptilus and Smutsornis. The genus Stiltia has only one species, Stiltia isabella (Vieillot, 1816) under it.

The genus Glareola comprises six species, namely Glareola pratincola, Glareola maldivarum, Glareola nordmanni, Glareola ocularis, Glareola nuchalis, Glareola cinerea and Glareola lactea.

The species Glareola maldivarum is also known as grasshopper-bird or swallow-plover. The genus name Glareola is from the Latin word glarea meaning "gravel" (indicating the habitat). The type specimen was caught alive at sea, off the Maldive Islands. Hence the species is named maldivarum.
