The small pratincole (Glareola lactea) belongs to the family Glareolidae under the order Charadriiformes.

Small pratincole taxonomy

Charadriiformes is a diverse order comprising about 350 species grouped under six suborders, viz., Lari, Charadrii, Chionidi, Turnici, Scolopaci and Thinocori.

The suborder Lari comprises six families, viz., Glareolidae, Laridae, Alcidae, Stercorariidae, Pluvianidae and Dromadidae.

The family Glareolidae is divided into subfamilies, Glareolinae and Cursoriinae. The subfamily Glareolinae comprises two genera, namely, Glareola and Stiltia.

The genus Stiltia has only one species, Stiltia isabella. The genus Glareola comprises seven species, viz., Glareola lactea, Glareola cinerea, Glareola nuchalis, Glareola ocularis, Glareola nordmanni, Glareola maldivarum and Glareola pratincola.

"The genus name Glareola is a diminutive of Latin glarea, "gravel", referring to a typical nesting habitat." The word "lactea" points to the pale coloration of the species.
