The Buffy fish owl (Ketupa ketupu) belongs to the family Strigidae under the order Strigiformes.
The birds in the order Strigiformes have several common characteristics, unique to them. They have upright stance, a large and broad head and a flat face. They have binocular vision and binaural hearing, an adaptation for nocturnal life.
These birds have large forward-facing eyes which are fixed in their sockets. These birds have a hawk-like beak, sharp talons and a facial disc, around each eye. The feathers making up this concave facial disc collect sound waves and direct them towards ear holes.
The order Strigiformes includes more than 200 species. With a few exceptions, most of them are solitary and are nocturnal birds of prey. These group of birds prey on insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals. Some of them have specialized in hunting invertebrates and vertebrates living in water.
