The Brown-headed gull (Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus) belongs to the family Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.
The Satellite Tracking of Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus by Ratanakorn P, et al. (PLoS ONE 7(11): e49939) gives us some interesting insights into the migratory movements of these species.
In this study of avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus spread, eight Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus negative for the virus were marked with solar-powered satellite platform transmitters at Bang Poo study site, Thailand. Their movements were monitored by the Argos satellite tracking system.
Only five birds completed the migration. Although all the birds began their flight from the same site in Thailand, they reached different breeding grounds in China, perhaps belonging to different flocks while in China. Their migratory route spanned Thailand, Myanmar, India, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia.
The average migratory distance of 2,400 km between China and Thailand was covered in approximately 12 days in average, flying approximately 200 km per day.
