Coppersmith barbet taxonomy
The family Megalaimidae was introduced by Edward Blyth (23 December 1810 – 27 December 1873), an English zoologist, in the year 1852. The family Megalaimidae comprises two subfamilies, namely, Megalaiminae and Caloramphinae. The subfamily Caloramphinae is monotypic and comprises the genus Caloramphus. The subfamily Megalaiminae is again monotypic and comprises the genus Psilopogon.
The genus Psilopogon was first described by Dr. Salomon Müller (April 7, 1804 – December 29, 1864), a German naturalist, in the year 1836. The genus Psilopogon comprises 32 species, including Psilopogon haemacephalus.
Earlier the Megalaimidae comprised three genera, Caloramphus, Megalaima and monotypic Psilopogon. But, molecular phylogenetic studies found that the genus Psilopogon has great similarities with the species under Megalaima, requiring merging of the genera.
The genus Psilopogon was described earlier than the genus Megalaima. On the basis of taxonomic priority principles, the species under Megalaima were brought under Psilopogon.
The species Psilopogon haemacephalus is polytypic and comprises nine subspecies, viz., P. h. haemacephalus, P. h. indicus, P. h. homochroa, P. h. delicus, P. h. roseus, P. h. mindanensis, P. h. cebuensis, P. h. intermedius and P. h. celestinoi.
