The yellow-footed green pigeon (Treron phoenicopterus) belongs to the family Columbidae under the order Columbiformes.

Yellow-footed green pigeon taxonomy

The bird family Columbidae was first described by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820.

The family Columbidae comprises 310 species in 42 genera, split into three subfamilies, viz., Columbinae, Claravinae and Raphinae.

The genus Treron was first described by Louis Pierre Vieillot (May 10, 1748 – August 24, 1830), a French ornithologist, in the year 1816. The genus Treron contains 29 species, including Treron phoenicopterus.

The species Treron phoenicopterus was first introduced by John Latham (27 June 1740 – 4 February 1837),an English physician, naturalist and author, in the year 1790.

The species Treron phoenicopterus is polytypic and comprises five subspecies, viz., T. p. phoenicopterus, T. p. annamensis, T. p. viridifrons, T. p. phillipsi and T. p. chlorigaster.
