The common tern (Sterna hirundo) belongs to the family Laridae under the order Charadriiformes.
Common tern taxonomy
The Laridae is the family of gulls, terns and skimmers. It comprises 100 species arranged into 22 genera. The family Laridae was first described by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (October 22, 1783 – September 18, 1840), a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot, in the year 1815.The genus Sterna was first introduced by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758. It comprises thirteen species, including species Sterna hirundo.
The species Sterna hirundo was first introduced by Carl Linnaeus in the year 1758. The species Sterna hirundo is polytypic and comprises four subspecies, viz., Sterna hirundo hirundo, Sterna hirundo minussensis, Sterna hirundo tibetana and Sterna hirundo longipennis.
