Brown hawk-owl taxonomy
The bird family Strigidae was first introduced by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820. The family Strigidae comprises nearly 220 living species in 25 genera, including genus Hinox.The genus Hinox comprises about thiry species, including species Ninox scutulata. This genus was first introduced by Brian Houghton Hodgson (1 February 1800 – 23 May 1894), a pioneer naturalist and ethnologist, in the year 1837.
The species Ninox scutulata was first introduced by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, FRS (6 July 1781 – 5 July 1826), a British statesman in the year 1820.
The species Ninox scutulata is polytypic and comprises nine subspecies, viz., N. s. scutulata, N. s. javanensis, N. s. borneensis, N. s. palawanensis, N. s. rexpimenti, N. s. isolata, N. s. burmanica, N. s. hirsuta and N. s. lugubris.
