The red tanager (Piranga flava) belongs to the family Cardinalidae under the order Passeriformes.

Red tanager taxonomy

The Cardinalidae is the family of cardinals and grosbeaks found in North and South America. The family Cardinalidae was first introduced by Robert Ridgway (July 2, 1850 – March 25, 1929), an American ornithologist, in the year 1901.

The family Cardinalidae comprises nine genera, including genus Piranga. The genus Piranga was first introduced by Louis Pierre Vieillot (May 10, 1748 – August 24, 1830), a French ornithologist, in the year 1808.

The genus Piranga comprises nine species, including Piranga flava. The species Piranga flava was first described by Louis Pierre Vieillot. The species Piranga flava was earlier placed under the tanager family Thraupidae.

The species Piranga flava is polytypic and comprises four subspecies, viz., Piranga flava flava, Piranga flava rosacea, Piranga flava saira and Piranga flava macconnelli.
