The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) belongs to the family Columbidae under the order Columbiformes.

Nicobar pigeon taxonomy

The family Columbidae was first introduced by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820.

The Columbidae comprises three subfamilies, namely, Columbinae, Claravinae and Raphinae. They include about 42 genera and 310 species.

The genus Caloenas was first described by George Robert Gray FRS (8 July 1808 – 6 May 1872), an English zoologist and author, in the year 1840. The genus Caloenas comprises one extant and two extinct species.

The species Caloenas nicobarica was first described (as Columba nicobarica) by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, in the year 1758.

The species Caloenas nicobarica is polytypic and comprises two subspecies, viz., Caloenas nicobarica nicobarica and Caloenas nicobarica pelewensis.
