The Indian pitta (Pitta brachyura) belongs to the family Pittidae under the order Passeriformes.
Indian pitta taxonomy
The family Pittidae was first described by William John Swainson FLS, FRS (8 October 1789 – 6 December 1855), an English ornithologist, malacologist, conchologist, entomologist and artist, in the year 1831.The family Pittidae comprises three genera, viz., Erythropitta, Hydrornis and Pitta. The genus Erythropitta comprises fifteen species. The genus Hydrornis comprises thirteen species.
The genus Pitta was first described by Louis Pierre Vieillot (May 10, 1748, Yvetot – August 24, 1830, Sotteville-lès-Rouen), a French ornithologist, in the year 1816. This genus comprises fourteen species.
The species P. brachyura (as Corvus brachyurus) was first described by Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist, in the year 1766.
