The white-cheeked (small green) barbet (Psilopogon viridis) belongs to the family Megalaimidae under the order Piciformes.

White-cheeked barbet taxonomy

The family Megalaimidae was first described by Edward Blyth (23 December 1810 – 27 December 1873), an English zoologist, in the year 1852. The family Megalaimidae comprises two subfamilies (Caloramphinae and Megalaiminae).

The subfamily Megalaiminae is monotypic and comprises a single genus, Psilopogon. The genus Psilopogon comprises 31 species.

The genus Psilopogon was first described by Dr. Salomon Müller (April 7, 1804 – December 29, 1864), a German naturalist, in the year 1836.

The species Psilopogon viridis (as Bucco viridis) was first described by Pieter Boddaert (1730 or 1733, Middelburg – 6 May 1795, Utrecht), a Dutch physician and naturalist, in the year 1783.

The species Psilopogon viridis is closely related to Psilopogon lineatus, Psilopogon zeylanicus and Psilopogon faiostrictus.
