The Knob-billed duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos) belongs to the family Anatidae under the order Anseriformes.

Knob-billed duck taxonomy

The Anatidae is the family of geese and swans. The family Anatidae was first introduced by William Elford Leach, MD, FRS (2 February 1791 – 25 August 1836), an English zoologist and marine biologist, in the year 1820.

The family Anatidae comprises seven subfamilies, including Tadorninae. The subfamily Tadorninae contains about 13 genera, including genus Sarkidiornis.

The genus Sarkidiornis was first described by Thomas Campbell Eyton JP, DL (10 September 1809 – 25 October 1880), an English naturalist, in the year 1838.

The genus Sarkidiornis comprises two species, viz., Sarkidiornis sylvicola and Sarkidiornis melanotos. The Sarkidiornis melanotos is a monotypic species.

The species Sarkidiornis melanotos was first described by Thomas Pennant (14 June OS 1726 – 16 December 1798), a Welsh naturalist, traveller, writer and antiquarian, in the year 1769.
