Beach thick-knee conservation status

The species Esacus magnirostris is listed by IUCN as "Near Threatened". The total population is estimated to be about 6,000 birds of which 4,000 are likely to be mature individuals. The population is declining due to human activities and predation by invasive mammals.

The species Esacus magnirostris are dispersed along coastal linear habitat. Their littoral, estuarine and shore habitats are being continuously degraded, fragmented and destroyed by the coastal development and the increase in human population pressure.

The human activities like use of off-road vehicles and other recreational activities on the shore have disturbed their nesting sites. In the presence of humans and dogs, the parents move away, leaving the eggs and chicks unguarded till the threat ceases. Thus exposing them to predation by foxes, feral dogs and pigs.
