Behavioral ecology of Ibisbill

The species Ibidorhyncha struthersii is an unique shorebird, well adapted for life in high altitude mountains, plateaus and river-rapids. They occur in Pamirs, Himalayas, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

The species Ibidorhyncha struthersii inhabit broad stony rivers and riverine landscapes like central riverine islands, riverside pastures and riverbanks. They feed by probing under gravel, pebbles and rocks on stream bed. They also feed on insects found in short vegetation found on river banks.

Though there are some resident populations in lower valleys, the breeding populations are generally found on the higher elevations. After breeding, these populations migrate to lower altitudes for wintering.

Foraging is the most prevalent activity accounting for nearly half of their activity. The peak foraging activity occurs after dawn and before dark in summer and throughout the day in winter because of constraints caused by low winter temperatures.
