The white-throated fantail (Rhipidura albicollis) belongs to the family Rhipiduridae under the order Passeriformes.
White-throated fantail taxonomy
The Rhipiduridae is the family of small insectivorous birds of Australia, Southeast Asia, China and the Indian subcontinent.The family Rhipiduridae was first described by Carl Jakob Sundevall (22 October 1801 – 2 February 1875), a Swedish zoologist, entomologist and arachnologist, in the year 1872.
The family Rhipiduridae comprises three genera, viz., Rhipidura, Lamprolia and Chaetorhynchus. The genus Rhipidura was introduced by Nicholas Aylward Vigors (1785 – 26 October 1840) and Thomas Horsfield M.D. (May 12, 1773 – July 24, 1859) in the year 1827.
The genus Rhipidura comprises about fifty species, including Rhipidura albicollis. The species Rhipidura albicollis is polytypic and comprises nine subspecies, viz., R. a. albicollis, R. a. canescens, R. a. sarawacensis, R. a. kinabalu, R. a. atrata, R. a. cinerascens, R. a. celsa, R. a. stanleyi and R. a. orissae.
