The pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) belongs to the family Recurvirostridae under the order Charadriiformes.

Pied avocet taxonomy

The species Recurvirostra avosetta is a large black and white wader. There are three more species under the genus Recurvirostra, namely Recurvirostra americana, Recurvirostra andina and Recurvirostra novaehollandiae.

The Recurvirostra genus name is from, Latin recurvus, "curved backwards" and rostrum, "bill". The Recurvirostra spp. have long legs, long, thin, upcurved bills, pied plumage and webbed feet. They are good swimmers.

These species feed on aquatic insects and other small animals. They have an unique feeding technique. They stretch out the neck and make 'scything' movements, moving head and slightly opened bill from side to side in water to filter and capture the food.

The nest on the ground in loose or close colonies. The breeding birds are very noisy and aggressively defend their nests and breeding territory from other intruding birds and animals.
